Starting school again can cause anxiety for students of all ages, but there are some things parents can do to help put their kids’ minds at ease.
SwedishAmerican Child Psychiatrist Dr. Evan Silvi says it’s helpful for parents to visit the school with their child before classes start. They can meet with teachers and help their child practice their locker combination.
It may also help to come up with a lunch plan before school begins. A little note from a parent in their child’s backpack can go a long way.
“First of all, we have to be very careful not to just tell kids that everything’s going to be alright,” added Dr. Silvi. “I think we need to look especially at what things are making them anxious and work with our children about problem solving.”
Rockford Public Schools begin class on Monday.
