Janesville Police are warning residents of several complaints in the past 24 hours of scam calls threatening jail time for income tax miscalculations.

The caller identifies themselves as being an agent of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and inform the victim that they will be taken into police custody because of miscalculations on their income tax returns.

Most of the calls are coming from a 614 area code in Ohio, police say.

Police say the IRS does not demand people use a specific payment method, such as a prepaid debit card, gift card or wire transfer, and does not ask for credit card numbers over the phone.
