The Rock River Park District has been awarded a $2 million grant to replace the Jefferson Street Bridge Pedestrian Underpass.
The total cost of the project is estimated to cost $2.5 million, with $500,000 of that coming from the District’s capital improvement plan (CIP) funds.
The bridge, which was opened in June of 1988, was built for $1.6 million, with materials that have deteriorated over time due to wear and tear, and past snow removal practices.
The Park District has been conducting annual inspections of the bridge and closed it in November of 2017.
The Illinois Transportation Enhancement Program has granted the $2 million for the repair.
The project is expected to take 2 years to complete, and will be completed in 2019.
