The Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office is giving credit to its K-9 officer Chico for helping to save a woman from a suicide attempt.
Police say a man called saying he had found his wife’s car at the Hononegah Forest Preserve at around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday morning. The caller allegedly told police that his wife had been suicidal.
Deputy Eric Pearson and his K-9 partner were sent to the area to search for her. Chico led police to a heavily wooded area where the woman was found alive, but unconscious and unresponsive.
She was taken to a Rockford hospital where she is being treated.
Paramedics on-scene said the woman most likely would have died had Deputy Pearson and Chico not found her when they did.
