A traffic stop leads to authorities busting a gang member for possessing a weapon and drugs.
Shortly before 1 p.m. on Monday, Rockford Police officers pulled a vehicle over in the 3300 block of Sablewood Drive. As soon as the car stopped, a passenger fled from the car.
Additional officers with Winnebago County and Illinois State Police responded to the scene. After they set up a perimeter, they were able to take the suspect into custody. He was identified as Malik Williams, 20, of Rockford.
During a subsequent investigation, officers located a handgun and more than five grams of cocaine.
Williams is charged with Unlawful Use of a Weapon by a Gang Member, Possession of Cocaine with Intent to Deliver, Armed Violence and Resisting an Officer. He was also wanted on an outstanding warrant by the Illinois Department of Corrections.
He is being held at the Winnebago County Jail.
