Drivers are one signature away from getting a break on those license plate renewal late fees.
The General Assembly passed a bill to eliminate the $20 penalty until the state can continue mailing out reminders. It only applies if your registration is less than a month overdue.
“We realized that was an inconvenience to some people who had grown accustomed to the reminder notices,” said Henry Haupt, a spokesman for the IL Secretary of State’s Office. “We felt if legislation passed, it would give people a break, it would eliminate the $20 late fee.”
All the bill needs is the Governor’s signature to pass. So far, the late fees have brought in more than $5 million for the state.
