Local Civil War veterans’ graves are decorated for Memorial Day

The men that fought in the Civil War have long passed, but one group makes sure they’re taken care of on Memorial Day as well.

The Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War makes sure that the men who fought over 150 years ago are not forgotten.
Here in Rockford, Greenwood Cemetery is the final resting place of 31 Union soldiers.
While their loved ones are also not here to celebrate them, the local chapter of the Sons of Union Veterans are making sure they’re taken care of.

”We kind of look out for this area. Replace the flags every year. Replace the flag on the flag pole when needed, and then we have a little service that we give which is about 133 years old right now”, said  Camp Commander, of the John A. Logan Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War Camp 26, Terry Dyer.

Flags aren’t the only decoration these soldiers’ graves received, the ladies auxiliary placed flowers down for them as well.
