Locals had the chance to help spread some holiday cheer downtown at ‘Shop On State’. They not only got to see what downtown Rockford shops have to offer but also help boost the local economy.
Guests were invited to explore the unique establishments throughout the area and the specialty items they carry. Minglewood store manager Lincoln Bias says the event is much more than just shopping.
“I think when you ‘Shop On State’, every purchase is an investment in the community,” said Bias.
He adds events like ‘Shop On State’ welcome residents to discover stores or restaurants they might not have known about before. “Of course, every business wants to make a profit. However, we would like to see downtown rejuvenated and we would like people to have a reason to come down and see what we have to offer.”
Dozens of participating businesses had special discounts or giveaways throughout the day. Ground Floor Skateboards owner Alicia Neubauer says it’s all in an effort to help the downtown area grow.
“We’re all having sales today. And when you support local businesses, you’re supporting your community, you’re supporting your downtown. We will in return support you.”
Mary Jo Hare was among the ‘Shop On State’ shoppers. She says the stores on State Street feature something different. They offer unique finds you can’t get at large retailers.
“I really like to buy local. So, this has been kind of fun to have all the shops open at one given day that you know you can get into any one of them and make some special purchases.”
Shoppers add it’s been rewarding not just to shop, but to also see how much the downtown area has grown over the years.
“It’s just a great place to walk down,” said shopper Linda Sonneson. “[It’s a great place to] look at and reminisce. Just see what’s being offered.”
Shoppers also had a chance to win a one-of-a-kind gift basket valued at over $750 filled with various items from several local shops and eateries.
