Local Group Helps Family of Fairgrounds Murder Victim

News

A local group is working to make something positive out of the deadly shooting last week.

The group “Fatherhood Encouragement Project” is hoping to put together a memorable Christmas for 25-year-old Rachel Garrett’s kids. Garrett, a mother of four, was killed by a stray bullet which pierced the wall of her Fairgrounds Housing Project apartment last Friday.

The group has been around since July. Their goal is to help men be better fathers to their children. They also offer each other advice, and help them deal with grieving process.

The father of Garrett’s four kids has reached out to the group. Member Ryan Curry says, “He’s wanting to do good. He’s wanting to take care of his children and do what’s best for them, and he’s stepping up to the plate, and he’s doing exactly what needs to be done.”

The group meets every Wednesday at 7:30pm at the YMCA in Loves Park.

Donations to the Garrett  family can be made at the Rockford Police Department’s Strong Neighborhood House at 1233 Revell Ave Rockford, IL 61107
