16-year-old charged in Belvidere shooting

BELVIDERE, Ill. (WTVO) — A 16-year-old has been charged after police responded to a 911 of multiple shots fired on Saturday afternoon.

Belvidere Police say they were called to the 600 block of Caswell Street. There, they said they were unable to find any injured persons, but said witnesses said they heard multiple gun shots in an alley between Caswell Street and Warren Avenue.

Police say they located spent shell casings from a 9mm handgun.

By interrogating witnesses, police say they were able to identify the 16-year-old as the alleged offender.

The gun, 10 grams of a controlled substance, and $1,300 was recovered during a search warrant which was served at 9:55 a.m. on Sunday morning.

The alleged offender was taken into custody and charged with Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm, No FOID, Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Armed Violence, and Unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance, .

The juvenile faces up to 30 years in prison if convicted.
