20-year-old man shot dead on E. State Wednesday identified

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — The Winnebago County Coroner has released the name of 20-year-old Joseph Hernandez, of Rockford, as the man slain yesterday during a shooting on E. State Street near SwedishAmerican hospital.

Rockford Police the victim and 23-year-old Quenton Smith got into an argument in the 100 block of Adams Street around 5:45 a.m.

Police say Smith started shooting at Hernandez, who fled on foot, to the 1300 block of E. State Street.

As Hernandez was getting into a car driven by a 23-year-old female, police say Smith fired additional shots.

Both the Hernandez and female were shot and went to Swedish American hospital across the street for treatment, but Hernandez did not survive.

Winnebago County Coroner Bill Hintz said Hernandez’s cause of death was a gunshot wound.

Detectives identified Smith as the suspect and were able to arrest him in the 700 block of Royal Avenue.

Smith is charged with First Degree Murder, Aggravated Battery with a Firearm, and Unlawful Use of Weapons by a Street Gang Member.

He is being held at the Winnebago County Jail on a $2 million bond.
