82-year-old blood donor visits Rockford blood center, on mission to donate in each state

Local News

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — 82-year-old Al Whitney, the founder of the charity “Platelets Across America,” greeted donors at the Rock River Valley Blood Center on Tuesday.

“Platelets Across America” is an organization with a mission to promote blood donations to those who are ill.

Whitney, who celebrated his birthday today, is currently on his second tour to donate in every state.

“[I’m encouraging] take an hour of their time and donate a pint of blood, and give a lifetime of hours to a patient, or somebody – a mother, a father, a baby – that’s in the hospital, that needs blood to stay alive.”

Whitney has been a blood donor since 1965.
