RACINE COUNTY, Wis. (WTVO) — A fatal crash in Racine County has closed all lanes of I-41/94 after a semi-truck exploded.
The crash happened at approximately 11 a.m. Wednesday. The Medical Examiner’s office says at least two people were killed in the crash, according to WISN.
The Racine County Sheriff said a semi driving southbound on I-94 made a lane change and hit a construction barrier, striking the median wall, shoving the barrier into the northbound lanes. There, three passenger vehicles collided with one another, the barrier, and the wall itself.
A second semi, heading northbound, took an evasive maneuver and went off road and burst into flames.
Both semi drivers were killed.
Two people have been sent to area hospitals in critical condition with burn and fracture injuries, according to the Racine County medical examiner.
The Wisconsin State Police say drivers should expect lengthy delays, but investigators have not said how many vehicles were involved in the crash.
About 10 miles of the highway was closed from Wisconsin 20/Washington Avenue to Ryan Road.
