BELOIT, Wis. (WTVO) — Beloit Police say officers shot and killed an armed car thief on Tuesday morning, after a short pursuit.
According to police, a Rock County Sheriff’s Office Deputy attempted to stop a suspect in a reportedly stolen vehicle in the area of Henry Avenue and Riverside Drive around 11:24 a.m.
The deputy reported hearing shots fired in the incident, during which he pursued the suspect vehicle.
The suspect ultimately ran on foot into the 1800 block of Harrison Avenue, at which time Beloit Police Officers joined in the chase.
According to Beloit Police, the three pursuing Beloit officers opened fire on the armed suspect, killing him.
The suspect, who has yet to be identified, was pronounced dead at 12:25 p.m.
No officers were injured in the incident.
The Wisconsin Department of Justice is handling an investigation of the shooting, and the three officers involved have been placed on administrative duty pending the outcome of the investigation.
Police had Park Avenue to Harrison blocked off with police tape and the tactical command center was set up at the scene, and have asked residents to avoid the area while they collect evidence.
The Beloit School District had placed Merrill, Aldrich and Robinson schools on soft lockdown, meaning no one can leave or enter the buildings, but school activities will continue as scheduled.
