Belvidere Police credit new playground for reducing crime

Local News

BELVIDERE, Ill. (WTVO) — The City of Belvidere is celebrating the unveiling of a new playground, called General Mills Park, which is located near North State and North Appleton.

On Friday, kids were able to play games, make crafts, and have some water fun, thanks to the Belvidere Fire Department.

The event also kicked off a community policing program that will be held in the park every Friday.

Belvidere Police say the park is already making a difference in the neighborhood.

“Every time you drive by here, this park is totally getting utilized,” said Ofc. Tim Blankenship. “There’s always families out here, and now, with the park here, and with us running the program out here, our calls for service out here is diminished greatly. It’s gone down a great deal.”

No tax dollars were used to build the park. Land for the project was donated, and General Mills and a private donor paid for the playground.
