Body recovered from Rock River, victim identified

Local News

ROCKTON, Ill. (WTVO) — The Winnebago County Coroner has identified the body found in the Rock River as 52-year-old Donald Woods, of Machesney Park.

The Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office says Woods’ body was recovered from the Rock River, two days after his abandoned boat was found near Atwood Forest.

Police say the body was found in the middle of the river off Ventura Boulevard, about a mile south of where the boat was discovered.

Rockton’s Fire Chief says the department got a call around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday night about an empty pontoon boat adrift on the river.

Divers were brought in to search for the boat’s owner, who was reported missing that night.

The search was called off Wednesday afternoon due to a threat of thunderstorms.
