Dixon hero Officer Mark Dallas to retire, successor named

DIXON, Ill. (WTVO) — Dixon Officer Mark Dallas, who stopped a school shooter at Dixon High School in 2018, has announced his retirement, and the police department has named his replacement.

Officer Dallas is credited with preventing a mass shooting at Dixon High School on May 16, 2018 after shooting and stopping a gunman who fired several shots in the school gymnasium during a senior graduation practice.

Dallas is a 15 year veteran of the Dixon Police Department and has 24 total years of law enforcement experience and had been assigned as the Dixon High School Resource Officer for the past 5 years. 

An outpouring of public support for Officer Dallas’ actions trended on social media following reports of the shooting.

Dallas, was awarded the ‘Police Officer of the Year’ award by the International Association of Chiefs of Police at a ceremony in Orlando, Florida in October, and was honored by President Trump.

With Dallas’ retirement approaching, Dixon Police conducted interviews with potential replacement candidates, landing on Officer Chris Scott.

Scott is an 11 year veteran of law enforcement who joined the Dixon PD in December 2017.

“I’m very excited for this new opportunity and look forward to continuing the standard that has been set by Officer Dallas,” he said in a statement.

Margo Empren, Superintendent of Dixon Public Schools, said, “School Resource Officers are responsible for safety and crime prevention in schools. In reality, they do that and so much more for DPS #170. District Administration and the DPS Board of Education want to thank and honor SRO Mark Dallas for his service at Dixon High School. Officer Dallas is a member of our Dixon Public Schools family. We are forever grateful for his service, especially on May 16, 2018. Our schools are a better place thanks to our partnership with the Dixon Police Department and the SRO program. We wish Officer Dallas a retirement filled with family, friends, and pride for a job well done.”

Dixon High School Principal Dr. Grady added, “School Resource Officers are responsible for safety and crime prevention in schools. In reality, they do that and so much more for DPS #170.
