ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — SwedishAmerican is providing patients with free legal service through their partnership with Prairie State Legal.
Issues that patients can receive help on include: apartment repairs, public benefits and eviction defense, expunging criminal records, obtaining orders of protection or divorce, preparing advanced directives, obtaining guardianship of a minor or disabled adult, fighting housing discrimination, addressing problems with public benefits, filing for bankruptcy, fighting foreclosure, and more.
Chad Thompson, Director of Outpatient Services and Care Coordination at SwedishAmerican, believes this partnership will fill a need that doctors can’t always fulfill.
“What is so exciting about this medical-legal partnership is that it allows a path to potentially address those variables in our patients lives. This is a free legal service,” Thompson said.
All interested patients will be screened for eligibility. Funding for this project is provided by Northern Illinois’ Community Grants Program.
An attorney will meet with clients by appointment at SwedishAmerican on Tuesdays from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the East Garden Entrance, SwedishAmerican Hospital, 1401 E State Street.
