Freeport Fire Department adds new firefighter to its ranks

Local News

FREEPORT, Ill. (WTVO) — The Freeport Fire Department added a new recruit to its ranks on Monday as 24-year-old Joseph Tanke was sworn in.

Tanke is from Huntley, Illinois, and was a part-time firefighter for about three and a half years.

Tanke received his Associate’s Degree in Fire Science from McHenry County College.

He says he chose to be a fireman because it’s in his blood.

“I am now a third generation firefighter,” he said. “In high school, I didn’t know exactly what I wanted to do. I took a first responder class, got very interested in it, and from there, I just continued to love it, through each class that I took, each training that I did.”

Tanke said he’s excited to start training with his fellow firefighters.
