FREEPORT, Ill. (WTVO) — Freeport Police have arrested two Rockford residents who are accused of murdering a 9-year-old boy in July of 2018.
Police say Robert Davidson, 32, and Antoinette Fane, 37, were arrested on Tuesday, December 10th after a long investigation into the death of Robert De’Yahre Davidson, 9.
According to Freeport Police, on July 15th police were called to an apartment on N. Grove Street around 11:13 p.m. after a neighbor reported sounds of apparent domestic violence and the sound of a child crying.
When police investigated, Davidson and Fane denied a domestic violence incident had occurred, and refused to allow officers into the apartment. Authorities say they presented two children, ages 11 and 13, to police. Both appeared to be unharmed. Officers then left the scene.
Later, at 1:07 a.m., police responded to the same address for a 911 call and found 9-year-old Robert De’Yahre Davidson unresponsive on the floor.
Police say the boy was not one of the two who they met with the preceding evening.
He was pronounced dead at 1:44 a.m. at Freeport Memorial Hospital.
Police say the boy was a resident of Forest Park and was visiting his biological father, Davidson, and his live-in girlfriend. Police say none of the children lived with the pair.
An autopsy later revealed the boy’s cause of death to be cardiac arrhythmia due to dehydration, excessive forced exercise, and multiple blunt force trauma injuries. Police say the boy’s body displayed numerous welts and abrasions on his back, shoulders and arms, and appeared as though he had been struck with a belt.
On December 9th, 2019, the investigation culminated in a Stephenson County Grand Jury indictment of Davidson for First Degree Murder, Aggravated Battery Causing Bodily Harm, Child Endangerment, and Aggravated Intimidation.
Fane was charged with Endangering the Life of a Child and Obstruction of Justice.
On December 10th, Freeport Police Detectives, along with agents from the FBI Chicago Field Office-Rockford Resident Agency and the Rockford FBI Safe Streets Task Force, arrested Davidson in the 1600 block of 17th Avenue in Rockford. Fane, also a Rockford resident, was arrested in the 200 block of Union Street in Byron.
They were both booked into the Stephenson County Jail.
