Coroner: BMX racer died of ‘laceration to the heart’

Local News

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — The Winnebago County Coroner said the preliminary cause of death of a teen who died Sunday in a BMX crash at Rockford’s Searls Park is due to laceration to the heart, from trauma.

15-year-old Carson Stoffel, of Huntington, Indiana, was killed in a freak accident when his bike collided with that of another rider, causing him to strike an obstacle, according to spectator reports.

The BMX community has started a fundraiser in the hopes of offering financial support to the family of the teen, who was killed while participating in the BMX Midwest Nationals.

The fundraiser can be found here.
