ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — Local businesses came together Friday to learn how they’ll be affected by new Illinois marijuana laws.

It was part of the Workforce Connection’s “Wages and Weed and Other Developments in Employment Law” forum.

Owners heard a presentation addressing the state’s new minimum wage and legalization of recreational marijuana.

Organizers say it’s important for businesses to have their questions answer before the end of the year.

“What are they going to do if somebody applies for work and they have, they have a marijuana conviction in their past, or they take, they offer a drug test and they don’t pass the drug test,” said Workforce Connection Communications Director John Strandin. “So, the time to decide that, the time to look at that is now, not after the law goes into effect.”

Illinois’ recreational marijuana law goes into effect on January 1st, 2019.
