IL Attorney General to Trump: ‘Don’t change the way poverty is calculated’

Local News

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WTVO) — Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul is asking the Trump Administration not to make changes to the way the poverty line is calculated.

Raoul joins 20 other attorney generals in the request, saying that millions of people could lose some or all of their eligibility for federal and state assistance if it happens.

The White House is considering lowering the inflation measure used to calculate who is below the poverty line.

Those numbers are used to decide a family’s eligibility for programs and benefits like SNAP and children’s health insurance.

The U.S. Census Bureau reports that nearly 13 percent of people in Illinois live in poverty.
