ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — Lena’s Volunteer Fire Department is celebrating 150 years of responding to calls and keeping the community safe.
People lined the streets to watch the celebratory parade on Saturday, August 3rd.
A stream of fire engines old and new made their way to the fire station. Once the parade ended residents were able to tour the station.
Current members of the fire crew rededicated a new memorial in honor of the century and a half of servicing Lena.
Fire Chief Brad Strong said that it’s the volunteers dedication to the job that makes this anniversary even more special.
“We’ve got firemen here today from 93 years old to 21 years old. So there’s a lot of tradition, there’s a lot of years of service and it’s all people volunteering giving themselves, giving their time to support their community,” Strong said.
The anniversary festitivites will end with a fireworks display behind the Lewin Elementary School.
