Murder in Rockford’s Rolling Green neighborhood rattles residents

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — One man is dead after a shooting in Rockford’s Rolling Green neighborhood early Thursday morning.

Neighbors say they were genuinely scared for their safety after the shooting happened on their street which, they say, up until now has been a very safe neighborhood.

“I heard the bang, bang, bang, bang, bang – real quick,” said neighbor Carol Pedersen.

Gunshots woke her up near her home on California Road just after 1 a.m.

Rockford Police officers were called to a house in the 3300 block and found a 24-year-old man laying, dying in the driveway.

He was taken to the hospital but passed way.

“It’s not what should be happening,” Pedersen said.

She lives just two houses down from the murder scene, and says the crime hits too close to home.

“I’ve not heard it happen on California before. I know it happens over on Colorado and Beach Street up there, but here, I’ve never had this happen before,” she said.

A 26-year-old woman who was also shot in the incident was dropped off at a hospital overnight.

“Obviously, crime is a situation in Rockford, so I’m not completely shocked, but that it was a block away… yeah, that bothers me,” said neighbor Lillea Miramontes.

Police said the shooting doesn’t appear to be at random, but neighbors say they’ve lived on the street a majority of their lives and for the first time, they’re worried about their own safety.

“People have to learn to be kinder. This is a pretty mixed neighborhood now, and you have to live together,” she said.

Police haven’t released the condition of the female shooting victim. They are asking that anyone with information on the crime to come forward.
