ROCKFORD (WTVO) – A dedication ceremony at a Rockford park honors a late public servant.
In December last year, Southwest Community Park was officially renamed Clarence Hicks Memorial Sports Park. Saturday, a new archway and sign were unveiled at the site, created as a tribute to Hicks and his 42 years of working for the Rockford Park District.
From 1961 until his retirement in 2003, he managed over 100 recreational programs.
Hick’s granddaughter Marie Ellis came to the dedication ceremony. She says, it was the perfect way to honor her grandfather.
“You feel it in your heart to see this come alive, and just seeing him be the face of the park every time you go in, with his name on the sign, signs before you get to the park, just let you know he meant something to the park district and to the children that he impacted.”, Marie Ellis said.
Ellis says her grandpa’s love for working in the Rockford Park District inspired her to help out at the Chicago Park District during the summers
