MACHESNEY PARK, Ill. (WTVO) — UPDATE 5 p.m.: Winnebago County Sheriff’s Detectives identified a suspect during the investigation of Sunday morning Cronies’ Bar murder.
Detectives obtained an arrest warrant and the suspect was lodged in the Winnebago County Jail.
28-year-old, Kenneth J. Johnson, of Rockford was charged with First Degree Murder (eight counts), Aggravated Battery with a Firearm, Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon and No FOID.
Johnson’s bond was set at $5 million cash.
The victim was also identified as 31-year-old Russel D. Jefferson of Rockford.
The Winnebago County Coroner says Jefferson died of a gunshot wound to the chest.
MACHESNEY PARK, Ill. (WTVO) — 9:08 a.m. : Winnebago County Deputies were dispatched to Cronie’s Bar, 9032 N. Second St, for a person shot around 1:30 a.m. Sunday morning.
According to authorities when officers arrived on scene they found a male with a gunshot wound, he was transported to Javon Bea Hospital Riverside where he was then pronounced deceased.
Police said that another male had arrived at Javon Bea Hospital Rockton with a gunshot wound, and that victim was treated and released with a non-life threatening gunshot wound.
There was a planned birthday event at Cronie’s Bar, officials said.
The suspect or suspects are not in custody, police said.
The investigation is on-going and Sheriff Gary Caruana is requesting assistance from the public.
