CRYSTAL LAKE, Ill. (WTVO) — The man who is the father of a girl born to JoAnn Cunningham, 36, is not the same man who fathered slain boy AJ Freund, according to the results of a new paternity test.
The Chicago Tribune reports that Daniel Nowicki Jr., 36, who lived with Cunningham, is the father of her daughter, who was born May 31st, after Cunningham was incarcerated for killing 5-year-old Andrew “AJ” Freund.
Cunningham and Andrew Freund, 60, are charged with killing the boy in April. Police said AJ was found beaten and forced into a cold shower before he died, and was then buried in shallow grave.
Freund led police to the body after incriminating material was found on a cellphone.
Cunningham and Freund were the parents of AJ’s younger brother.
The Tribune reports that Nowicki lived with the family last year but moved out before AJ’s death.
The paternity results were revealed in McHenry County court in a custody dispute over the surviving boy and Cunningham’s newborn daughter.
Both children are currently in the care of the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services.
Prosecutors in the case are trying to revoke Cunningham and Freund’s parental rights to the 4-year-old.
Nowicki pleaded guilty in May to aggravated battery in which he was accused of kicking a nurse in the stomach, twisting the arm of another nurse, and squeezing the crotch of a security guard at a Woodstock hospital in December 2018.
