DEKALB, Ill. (WTVO) — A series of fires at one apartment complex in DeKalb have police suspecting arson, exactly one year since a similar rash of fires happened in the same building.
On June 23rd, 2019, the DeKalb Police Department were called to 808 Ridge Drive, where a small fire was located in the common laundry room. A resident had put the fire out prior to police arriving.
Then, on June 26th, officers were again called to the apartment complex, where several areas had been set on fire. Police say the damage was minimal, and had taken place in common areas within the complex, and no injuries were reported.
Last year, a series of arson fires also happened in June…
On Wednesday, June 6th, 2018 at 6:16 a.m., a fire in the apartment caused extensive damage, rendering eight apartments uninhabitable. Four people were rescued by the Fire Department.
On Friday, June 8th, an occupant stated that a fire alarm sounded just before 6 a.m., and upon opening the door, found a door mat on fire. The resident extinguished the fire and called 911.
While the police and fire departments were investigating the fire, a second smoke alarm sounded in another area of the building. The source of the fire was another hallway fire, which was extinguished. Police say they believe the second fire was lit while the police and fire department were present.
On Monday, June 11th, at 12:28 a.m., DeKalb Fire and Police responded again to reports of a “suspicious fire” inside of a vacant apartment that was extinguished by a resident. Damage was minimal, and no injuries occurred.
DeKalb Police say they have gone door to door notifying the residents of the incidents, and will be conducting extra patrols around 808 Ridge Drive.
