UPDATE: The Illinois State Police Integrity Task Force is investigating a double fatal crash Thursday night at Auburn and Springfield.
The Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office says deputies noticed a suspicious dark colored SUV driving recklessly around North Central Avenue around 10:30 p.m.
Deputies tried to stop the SUV but it sped off at a high rate of speed so the officers stopped the chase.
A short time later, deputies found the SUV, realizing two people were in the car. Deputies say the driver tried to hit their patrol car and sped off once again.
Deputies chased the SUV westbound on Auburn Street and that’s when the SUV crashed into another vehicle at the intersection with Springfield.
The two people from the SUV and one person in the other vehicle were taken to the hospital.
Two men have died from the crash.
ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — The Winnebago County Coroner’s Office says a 50-year-old man and a 36-year-old man died in a late night crash at Auburn Street and Springfield Avenue.
Both were pronounced dead at the Emergency Room at Mercyhealth Javon Bea Hospital Riverside.
Their names are being held pending notification of family.
Two cars were involved in the crash around 11:00 p.m. Thursday night.
Two adults were trapped inside one of the vehicles and had to be extricated.
Both were taken to the hospital, one of them had life threatening injuries.
The driver of the other car was also taken to the hospital in critical condition.
It’s not known yet which cars either of the men were in.
