ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — US Army veteran Donald Witt displayed his 48-star flag in front of his Rockford home on Thursday, 75 years after the D-Day invasion of Normandy.
The flag belonged to his father.
Witt was 7-years-old on June 6th, 1944. He remembers looking up to US World War II soldiers as heroes.
He says the flag serves as a reminder of the history that shaped the future of America.
“The Greatest Generation…fought and died at Omaha Beach and others on D-Day. [My dad] said ‘keep this flag, it’s very important.’ So, I did,” Witt said.
Witt says he hopes citizens continue to commemorate D-Day each year.
