ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — A 20-year-old man is dead after a shooting that took place on E. State Street near SwedishAmerican hospital early Tuesday morning.

Rockford Police say they responded to a ShotSpotter gunshot detection system alert to the 100 block of Adams Street around 5:45 a.m.

Officers learned that the shooting started with an argument between two individuals. Once the shooting started, Police Chief Dan O’Shea says gunfire was exchanged south on Adams Street and into E. State Street.

The victim was taken to SwedishAmerican for treatment of gunshot wounds, but did not survive.

Police say they are actively looking for the shooter. At a press conference this morning, O’Shea said that police believe they know who the individual is, but have not yet released a name.
