ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — Washington has sent Rockford $400,000 to clean up contaminated property in the city.

The federal grant comes through the Environmental Protection Agency. The money will go toward cleaning “Brownfield” sites throughout the city, including the former Barber Colman village, a 22-acre site in the 1200 block of Rock Street.

Brownfield sites may contain hazardous materials that prevent redevelopment of the land.

The cleanup at Barber Colman is the latest step in transforming the campus into an advanced technology center for Rock Valley College.
