WINNEBAGO COUNTY, Ill. (WTVO) — The first participants of a new youth police summer camp program were honored at a graduation ceremony on Monday.
A ceremony, celebrating the kids who completed the Winn-Rock Youth Police Camp, was held at Rockford University.
The week-long program, hosted by the Rockford Police Department and Winnebago County Sheriff’s Department, featured a variety of activities.
Members of the Rockford Fire Department, S.W.A.T. and K-9 units were also on hand.
Participants also were able to see a Mercyhealth medical REACT helicopter.
The week-long program included physical fitness training and classroom lectures, focusing on lessons such as how to avoid peer pressure and substance abuse.
Police say the main goal of the camp is to bridge the gap between youth and law enforcement and encourage some to become future peace officers.
