Rockton residents get a look at proposed downtown beautification plan

Local News

“Downtown is the living room to a community, there’s definitely beautification that needs to happen,” said Rockton Planning and Development Administrator Tricia Diduch.

Main Street in the heart of downtown Rockton is home to it’s fair share of local businesses and
resident shoppers. Village officials want to make it a more attractive place for residents and visitors. “We think that we can be one of the premiere destinations for weekend getaways, day trips, and just making it a more inviting space for people to come and gather,” Diduch said.

Residents got a look at the village’s proposed ‘Streetscape Master Plan’. With it comes improvements like floral decorations, improvements to sidewalks, and more bench seating. “Part of the plan also has improvements for Village Green Park where the Walt Williamson Pool is, as well as Settler’s Park where we have the very successful ‘Old Settlers Days’,” Diduch added.

“Rockton is starting to gradually make changes I think are necessary to bring people to Rockton because it’s such a great town,” said long time resident Linda Bressler. With the business district improvements, parking spaces on Blackhawk and Main Street will be changed from diagonal to parallel.

If done, it will take away 19 available spots in that square block. Shelley Day manages the ‘Gem Shop’ in downtown Rockton and she is concerned that fewer spots means fewer customers not just for her, but other businesses too.

“We have already had complaints about not having adequate parking now, so whenever your taking away 9 of those parking places to make them parallel just to make a sidewalk bigger it just doesn’t make good business sense to me,” Day said.

The Rockton Planning Commission unanimously approved the ‘Streetscape Master Plan’ during their Tuesday night meeting. The next possible discussion with the full village board will be on April 17th. Eyewitness News spoke with Teska Associates, the company hired to develop the plan, they say despite loss of parking on Main and Blackhawk, there will be added municipal parking.
