State offers free transportation for students facing gang areas

Local News

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — The Illinois State Board of Education wants parents to know their child could get free transportation to and from school if the student has to walk through areas with criminal gang activity.

It’s for kids who live too close to a school and wouldn’t normally get bused.

The Board of Education has a template letter parents can use to request their school district review the route. The letter is available on the ISBE website at www.isbe.net/transportation.

That will determine if a serious safety hazard due to gang activity exists.
