Sterling firefighter dies battling housefire

STERLING, Ill. (WTVO) — A Sterling firefighter died Friday night while fighting a housefire.

The fire happened at 10031 Ridge Road in Rural Rock Falls at approximately 11:04 p.m. 38-year-old Lt. Garrett Ramos of the Sterling Fire Department reportedly fell through a floor while battling the blaze, according to the City of Sterling. While EMX crews attempted lifesaving techniques en route to CGH Medical Center where doctors continued their life saving efforts to no avail.

Ramos’ death is the first line line of duty death in the history of the Sterling Fire Department.

Ramos had served with the Sterling Fire Department since October of 2012. He leaves behind his wife and 2 young children.

The State Fire Marshal is reportedly conducting a full investigation.
