Truckers may be hardest hit by Illinois gas tax increase

Local News

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WTVO) — Illinois’ new gas tax will soon double for drivers, and for those who use diesel fuel, the cost will be even higher.

When the Motor Fuel Tax increase takes effect, the .19 cents per gallon tax will increase to .38 cents per gallon.

Drivers using diesel fuel will see a jump to .45 and a half cents per gallon.

According to the Illinois Trucking Association, the average tractor trailer pays $9,000 a year in taxes to the State.

But, trucking industry leaders are saying the tax is a good thing.

“We have to invest in our roads and we have to invest in our bridges,” said Matt Hart, executive director of the Illinois Trucking Association. “And we know that the Motor Fuel Tax is the most efficient way to invest in our roads and bridges.”

The new tax goes into effect on July 1st.
