Two Madison power plants on fire Friday morning

Local News

MADISON, Wis. (WTVO) — Two Madison Gas & Electric substations were on fire Friday morning in Madison, sending plumes of dark smoke into the air that could be seen for miles.

Madison Police Public Information Officer Joel De Spain said there were reports of a loud boom at the first substation, at 10 North Livingston, reported a fire around 7:30 a.m.

The second fire was reported near N. Park Street.

Officials are advising people to avoid downtown. Power was briefly knocked out at City Hall and several blocks of street signals are not working.

MG&E estimates 13,000 customers are without power.

Madison Gas & Electric said, via Twitter, that they believe the fires are due to a mechanical issue.

The fire department says the fires have been brought under control.
