Local non-profit builds homes for two families, including a veteran

BELVIDERE, Ill. (WTVO/WQRF) – A local nonprofit builds a pair of homes for deserving families.

Boone County Habitat for Humanity held an open house Thursday evening, showcasing construction for one of the homes. It’s for a Belvidere mother and her three kids.

Nearby, preparation is underway to build another home for a Boone County veteran and his family.

The families have to put in 300 hours of “sweat equity” to help with construction.

“It’s not an easy thing to be a Habitat homeowner, but they are determined and they are just excited and blessed, they feel blessed,” said Kim Mickey, Executive Director for Habitat for Humanity in Boone County.

The organization will be holding several fundraisers for the families. The next is Friday (7/26), at Dairy Ripple, 105 South State Street in Belvidere, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m..
