Beginning four years ago, the first Tuesday following Thanksgiving has been dubbed ‘Giving Tuesday.’
Charities, non-profits, and other organizations that support local communities encourage donations to benefit people most in need. Since its founding in 2012, online giving on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving has increased more than four-fold.
Locally in the Rockford region, organizations like the Northern Illinois Food Bank and local chapters of the United Way, American Red Cross and YMCA all took part today.
The Northern Illinois Food Bank vowed to match 100% of the donations they received. The United Way used funds donated to go towards the Strong Neighborhood houses throughout Rockford, including the Midtown House on 8th Avenue that officially opened on the same day.
The Red Cross using the resources for food, shelter and clothing for those throughout Illinois displaced by fires and other disasters, and the YMCA using donations to serve the nearly 750,000 kids and adults who use their facilities and programs daily.
