Longtime Rockford Orchestra Teacher Donald Zimmerman Dead at 86

The founder of the Rockford Chamber Orchestra and Rockford Area Youth Symphony Orchestra has died.

Donald Zimmerman, 86, was an orchestra teacher at West and Guilford High Schools. He was also a local co-founder of The Golden Apple Award to recognize excellence in teaching.

Zimmerman is survived by his wife, children and great-grandchildren.

A celebration of his life will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday at the University Club at 945 N. Main Street in Rockford. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to The Golden Apple Foundation, the Rockford Symphony Orchestra and Northern Illinois Hospice.
