The Loves Park Police Department got a new four-legged member.
Blitz is the newest addition to the squad, and he is already building a bond with his handler, Luke Limberg.
The pair is helping bridge the gap between the department and it’s citizens.
“It’s been fun so far with him,” Limberg said.
The two teamed up back in February to help make Loves Park a safer place. They’re also working together to build trust between the department and the community.
“He’s great for community relations,” Limberg said. “Everybody loves dogs, not every body really loves us, but they love dogs, and they love seeing what they can do,” Limberg said.
And Blitz has already done a lot.
“He’s assisted on three or four drug arrests already,” Limberg said. “We’re learning, we’ll get it though.”
Learning and getting to know each other.
“He didn’t know me at all, then all of a sudden I had to take him home,” Limber said. “He’s from another country. Then, I take him home to my house and then new experience to him, new experience to me, so everything was brand-new and that’s kind of the where it kind of started from there.”
He then said, “It’s all about trust. You know he had to start trusting me and trusting that I’m not a bad guy to him. I’m going to feed him, I’m going to love up on him, I’m going to brush him, I’m going to play with him, I’m going to give him his toy back if he gives it to me, so it’s all a trust building process”
So far, that process is working.
“It’s getting to the point now where if he sees me in uniform, he’s getting all jacked up, like he’s jumping around and kind of all ready to go because he wants to come to work and that’s what he loves doing,” Limberg said.
Limberg tells us that he looks forward to him and Blitz continuing to grow as partners and hopes that the growth brings much success.
