Machesney Park school renames cafeteria after retiring employee

News

A Machesney Park school honors a long-time employee by naming part of a building after him.

The Donald C. Parker Early Childhood Center dedicated its cafeteria to Bruce Henning on Wednesday morning. Henning has been a custodian for the Harlem School District for 40 years and is preparing to retire.

Henning first worked at North Park School, Harlem High School and Windsor Elementary before moving to Parker.

Assistant Principal Ryan Reinecke says Henning’s dedication to his job was unparalleled.

“A lot of what Mr. Bruce does goes unnoticed, and that’s really great, actually,” said Reinecke. “When you don’t know what Mr. Bruce did, that means everything was clean, everything was as it’s supposed to be.”

Henning said, “You get the sense of completion when something looks good, especially after summer cleaning!”

Henning was a 4 veteran of the U.S. AirForce before becoming a custodian.
