Some people would say the best way to learn how to do something is ‘hands-on’. Another factor may be ‘make it fun’. There’s a local organization that meets both criteria: Rockford Robotics.
Superior Joining Technology is home to Rockford Robotics, a team made up of high school students from public and private schools, as well as home-schooled students, to build future engineers of the world.
The work area is a few thousand foot ‘bot shop’ behind Superior Joining Technologies in Machesney Park.
Team members work alongside adult mentors to build robots and solve problems.
“We get a six week design an build season,” said Eric Williams, a mentor at Rockford Robotics. “So the first organization launches the game at the beginning of January and we get six weeks to come up with our strategy, figure out our design, build the robot, bag it up and then bring it to competition.”
Thursday night’s event was put on to thank the team’s sponsors: Superior Joining Technology, UTC Aerospace, Woodward, Bergstrom and Rockford Systems. Williams says without their support, Rockford Robotics wouldn’t exist.
