SPRINGFIELD – Wednesday, Illinois House members re-elected Rep. Michael Madigan (D-Chicago) as the House Speaker, continuing his streak as the longest-serving statehouse speaker in U.S. history.
“Congratulations, you’re the Speaker again,” former Attorney General Lisa Madigan, his daughter, told him.
Rep. Emanuel Chris Welch (D-Westchester) nominated Madigan to fulfill the speakership.
According to IllinoisPolicy.org, Madigan was re-elected on a 72-44 vote, which followed the 101st General Assembly inauguration.
Madigan has served in the Illinois House since 1971, and as speaker, all but two years, since 1983.
