Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan announced the filing of a lawsuit on Monday against the Suburban Express bus company and its owner, Dennis Toeppen, for alleged discrimination and harassment against its customers.

The company runs the Illini Shuttle between the University of Illinois and the Chicago area. In December, the company sent out an email advertisement that some people felt was bigoted against Asians. The ad said riders “won’t feel like you’re in China when you’re on our buses.

“My lawsuit alleges that Suburban Express has long been engaged in illegal discrimination and harassment against college students in Illinois, particularly University of Illinois students and their families,” Madigan said.

“This is explicit race-based discrimination that, in addition to being unacceptable, is also illegal,” Madigan added.
