Man arrested after crashing car into tree, running from the cops

A police officer arrests a fleeing suspect who crashed his car into a tree.

At 11:25 p.m. on Wednesday, a Rockford Police Officer was conducting a traffic stop in the area of N. 2nd Street and Y Boulevard when he heard a vehicle close by careen out of control. The officer left his initial traffic stop and found a vehicle that had struck a tree and then become stuck on the median.

The driver, Dex Pouncy, 30, of Rockford, fled on foot from the officer. After a brief foot chase, the officer was able to apprehend Pouncy and take him into custody.

Cannabis and a loaded handgun were recovered from Pouncy’s vehicle. Pouncy has a prior weapons conviction in Illinois.

He was charged with Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon, Unlawful Use of a Weapon by a Felon, no FOID card, Possession of Cannabis 10 gm. or Less, Hit and Run, Resisting an Officer, and Failure to Reduce Speed to Avoid and Accident.

He was taken to the Winnebago County Jail.
