A man is in custody after reportedly firing at a Forest Preserve employee at the Hononegah Forest Preserve Campground.

47-year-old Jerry T. Krause was charged with Aggravated Discharge of a Fiream and having no FOID card following the incident on Saturday.

The Winnebago County Sheriff’s Department says that an employee of the Forest Preserve went to collect camping fees at around 8:25pm Saturday night when Krause brandished a pistol and then began firing as the employee fled.

Campers who witnessed the shooting were able to subdue Krause until police could arrive, with one of them shooting a dog described as aggressive which belonged to Krause.  The dog did not survive, and police say the camper who shot the dog did have a valid FOID card and concealed carry permit.

Police say Krause is from Williston, ND.

Krause is being held in the Winnebago County jail on no bond pending his arraignment.
