A man trapped inside a flaming car dies after a head-on collision leads to a 5-car pile-up on Rt. 64 on Monday.
The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office says two accidents occurred: in the first, a vehicle driven by Roger Cavins, 53, of Rockford, was heading west on Rt. 64 and crossed the center line, hitting a second vehicle, driven by Richard Pittman, 49, of Sycamore, head on.
Cavins vehicle burst into flames and he was trapped inside. Deputies attempted to extinguish the fire but were unable to. Cavins died at the scene.
Pittman’s vehicle rolled over in the crash and started on fire, but he was able to escape. He was taken to Kishwaukee Hospital and then St. Anthony Hospital in Rockford for non-life threatening injuries.
A third vehicle stopped to avoid the accident and was rear ended by another driver. A fifth vehicle tried to stop to avoid hitting the fourth vehicle, but rear-ended it.
The drivers of the third and fourth vehicles were taken to the hospital for non-life threatening injuries.
The driver of the fifth vehicle was treated and released at the scene.
Rt. 64 was shut down for approximately 5 hours. The accident remains under investigation.
